Real history, fictional plot

Jean Descas was a real person. He is the main character of the immersive show Le dernier bal de Jean Descas. The plot itself is fiction: a Roaring Twenties cabaret thriller created for Château Théâtre Descas in Bordeaux. The venue and the name are historical. The crime, the secrets and the ending belong to the theatre.

Who was Jean Descas?

From modest roots to Bordeaux

Born on 1 November 1834 in Loubens (Gironde) to a farming family, Jean Descas began an apprenticeship as a cooper at fourteen. He married Marie Laffargue in Bagas on 22 February 1854, became a cellar master in Bordeaux and founded the Domaine des Fillières in Camiran, with cellars along the Dropt river.

In 1861 he founded the Descas wine merchant house at 49 rue Carpenteyre in Bordeaux. From 1872, a sawmill-cooperage in Bagas let him control the full chain: vines, barrels, logistics and sales. His business grew to about twenty cellars scattered across the city.

Everyday wines and the railway

While Chartrons merchants often focused on exports to Northern Europe, Jean Descas specialised in everyday wines, especially soft whites, shipped in large volumes by rail. By settling near Bordeaux Saint-Jean station and the quai de Paludate, he stood apart from the classic Place and gained a strategic position on the French market.

In 1881 he bought the former foundling hospital, a vast riverside site. With his son Camille he transformed it (1890-1893) with architect Alphonse Ricard: apartments, offices, shipping halls, tasting room, modern cellars. Château Descas could store around 1.5 million bottles and tens of thousands of barrels. A landmark of Bordeaux's mercantile quays, it still marks the skyline between Saint-Jean station and the Garonne.

Mayor of Camiran

Jean Descas never moved into the château on the quai de Paludate: he stayed on rue Carpenteyre. He died on 17 July 1895 in Camiran, where he was mayor. That same year the Descas family also entered the story of Domaine de Certes in Audenge, on the Arcachon Bay.

From merchant house to theatre

More than a century later, Château Descas has lived as a wine warehouse, nightclub, empty shell and renaissance venue. Today Château Théâtre Descas, at 5 quai de Paludate in Bordeaux, hosts concerts, shows and Le dernier bal de Jean Descas: an immersive thriller where the audience moves through the salons the merchant once gathered under one roof.
